English Language Instructors positions

Would you like to assist members of our community to improve their English language skills in a relaxed environment?
Volunteers are required to assist in the instruction of English conversation skills in a group environment or on an individual basis.

Conversation Buddies

Program matches Adult English Learners with English Speaking members of the community who assist students to build confidence with English language skills one on one.
One hour weekly sessions during school terms at Whitehorse Manningham Libraries branches.

Conversation Circle

Provide assistance in a group environment to others wishing to build their confidence with their English conversation skills.
45 minutes sessions held weekly during school term:

Box Hill Library Tuesdays 6.30pm
Box Hill Library Saturdays 2pm
Doncaster Library Thursdays 10.15am
Vermont South Library Fridays 2.15pm

There are currently vacancies for volunteer Conversation Circle leaders at Box Hill Library on a Saturday afternoon and Vermont South Library on a Friday afternoon. If you are interested in either of these roles please register your interest by filling in an online form, available here.


You will need to:
• Have excellent English language skills
• Experience in tutoring and/or teaching (preferable)
• Have the ability to work with a variety of people from a range of different cultural backgrounds
• Be able to commit to an agreed schedule

Conversation Buddies – learners

We are currently accepting expressions of interest in this program for 2019.

All sessions are free

Practise your English one on one with a friendly volunteer.

One hour weekly sessions during school terms.

Story Circle Volunteer

Are you interested in telling stories to adults?

Whitehorse Manningham Libraries are looking for a volunteer to assist in the delivery of an outreach program, involving telling stories to adults. This interactive program is run in collaboration with aged care facilities in the cities of Whitehorse and Manningham. We are currently looking for a volunteer to deliver the program at an Aged Care Facility in Templestowe.

Prior to each session, all storytellers are provided with a kit containing information on a theme. Kits may include stories, poems, jokes or other items that may ignite conversation. All volunteer storytellers are provided with training, supervision and ongoing support throughout the program.

The time commitment for this role is approximately 3-4 hours per month. Each volunteer runs a monthly one hour storytelling session within an aged care facility. A minimum commitment of 2 years to this role is preferred, as the relationship between the volunteer and the participants is vital to the success of this program.

To be successful in this volunteer role you will need the following:
• A clear speaking voice
• A good sense of humour
• Excellent expressive English language skills
• The ability and confidence to engage with residents and staff of aged care facilities
• Confidence to tell stories and share information with a group, and the skill to stimulate conversation, laughter and reminiscence.
