Do you love a good chat? Can you spin a captivating yarn? Could you encourage others to share their stories and memories?
Whitehorse Manningham Libraries are calling on volunteers to assist in the delivery of the Story Circle program – an interactive sharing of memories and stories with adults living in aged care facilities in the cities of Whitehorse and Manningham.
Prior to each session, volunteers are provided with a story circle kit based on a theme. Kits may include stories, poems, jokes, images or other items that can be used to ignite conversation. All volunteers will be provided with training, supervision and ongoing support throughout the program.
The time commitment for this role is approximately 3-4 hours per month. Each volunteer will run a monthly one hour Story Circle session within an aged care facility. A minimum commitment of 12 months to this role is preferred, as the relationship between the volunteer and the participants is vital to the success of this program.
To be successful in this volunteer role you will need the following:
- A clear speaking voice
- A good sense of humour
- Excellent expressive English language skills
- The ability and confidence to engage with residents and staff of aged care facilities
- Confidence to share stories, memories and information with a group, and the skill to stimulate conversation, laughter and reminiscence.
As travel to the aged care facility is required, volunteers must have a current driver’s license and their own vehicle. There are currently some volunteer vacancies within the City of Whitehorse area and the City of Manningham.
